Josh Heupel has already loaded Tennessee football up at running back. Jabari Small, Jaylen Wright and Len’Neth Whitehead are all returning underclassmen, and he added Justin Williams-Thomas and Dylan Sampson in the Vols’ 2022 class.

Now, he has UT trending for an Alabama back in 2023. Jeremiah Cobb, who hails from Montgomery Catholic in Montgomery, Ala., has the Vols in his top six. A four-star across the board, Cobb stands at 5’11” and weighs in the range of 185 to 190 pounds.

Joining Tennessee football on Cobb’s list are the Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Clemson Tigers, LSU Tigers and Texas Longhorns. At least the Alabama Crimson Tide are out of the way. He announced the schools with a graphic Monday afternoon on Twitter.

Given his frame, Cobbs is listed as an all-purpose back on Rivals, although he is listed as a running back everywhere else. Since Wright would be a junior entering 2023, there would definitely be a need for depth when it comes to that role at running back in Heupel’s system.

Cobb is truly an all-purpose back in high school. According to MaxPreps, he has 467 carries for 4,551 yards (9.7 yards per carry), 35 catches for 765 yards and 62 total touchdowns. He also has a kickoff return for a touchdown.

This past year alone, Cobb had 195 carries for 2,163 yards (11.1 yards per carry), 24 catches for 561 yards and 38 total touchdowns from scrimmage. It was also the year he had his kickoff return TD, so he finished with 39 overall touchdowns.

Simply put, Cobb is an elite athlete at running back, and he would be a major addition to the Vols. He also plays baseball and runs track and field, so he’ll bring a lot to the table if Heupel is able to lure him to Rocky Top.

Currently, Auburn is the unanimous favorite to land him on the Rivals Future Cast and has the only two 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions, both with a medium confidence interval. They are a plurality favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast.

On3 has them as a 95 percent favorite with Clemson second and Tennessee football third but with less than a one percent chance. As a result, the Vols have a lot of work to do to land Cobb, particularly against Auburn, but given the issues facing that program and Bryan Harsin, they have to have a chance.
