Tennessee Vols morning report: Baseball SEC postseason awards

Every sport surrounding Tennessee Vols athletics has seen its regular season come to an end. Postseason play remains underway for some of them, and others are just about to get set to begin postseason play this week.

With the start of the SEC baseball tournament today, our morning update on Rocky Top leads with UT loading up on baseball awards in league play this year. UT doesn’t play its first tourney game until Wednesday, but it made plenty of news Monday on the SEC baseball front with postseason recognition across the board.

Along with the baseball news, men’s and women’s tennis both generated news Monday with singles play in both sports. Meanwhile, the men’s tennis program added a player, which we’ll cover. So let’s go ahead and dive in with the news, starting with baseball.

Baseball Vols load up on SEC awards – SECSports

Seven Tennessee Vols baseball players took were recognized by the Southeastern Conference in 12 different ways in their postseason awards Monday. Chase Dollander, Trey Lipscomb and Drew Gilbert all made First Team All-SEC. Chase Burns and Drew Beam made Second Team All-SEC and, along with Blake Burke, made All-Freshman. Drew Gilbert made All-Defense.

"LSU’s Dylan Crews and Auburn’s Sonny DiChiara were named SEC Co-Players of the Year, Tennessee’s Chase Dollander is the SEC Pitcher of the Year, Tennessee’s Drew Beam is the SEC Freshman of the Year, Georgia’s Ben Anderson is the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Tennessee’s Tony Vitello is the SEC Coach of the Year."

Chase Dollander named SEC Pitcher of the Week – SECSports

In addition to being the Southeastern Conference’s Pitcher of the Year, Dollander took home the league’s final Pitcher of the Week award. Dollander earned the recognition for his performance in UT’s series-opening win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs last Thursday, where he had a no-hitter through six innings before being pulled.

"Dollander struck out six and lowered his NCAA-leading WHIP to 0.72. He was the only pitcher in the conference to give up less than three hits and go more than 5 innings in the conference."

Both men’s tennis Vols advances in singles – NCAA.com

Adam Walton and Johannus Monday both won their matchups Monday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships. Doubles play begins Tuesday, and the Tennessee Vols have Walton and Pat Harper taking part in that along with Shunsuke Mitsui and Emile Hudd.

"The 2022 DI men’s tennis singles round of 64 is complete. Play will continue Tuesday with the round of 32."

Rebeka Mertena falls in women’s tennis singles championships – NCAA.com

The one representative of the Tennessee Lady Vols in NCAA women’s tennis singles championships, Rebeka Mertena, fell in three sets Monday. Doubles play begins Tuesday with  Tenika McGiffin and Daria Kuczer taking part.

"After one day of singles competition, the DI women’s tennis championship field has been reduced to 32."

Men’s tennis adds new transfer – UTSports

Purdue Boilermakers transfer Gabriele Brancatelli has joined the Tennessee tennis program. He arrives with three years of eligibility remaining.

"In 2021-22, Brancatelli logged a 16-11 overall singles record, including a 10-4 mark in dual matches and a 6-2 record at the No. 2 lineup spot. Prior to landing in West Lafayette, Indiana, Brancatelli spent time living in Florence, Italy, New York and Palm Beach, Florida."
