Ranking all 10 returning Tennessee Lady Vols for 2022-2023
6′ 2″
Welcome to the injury that started it all last year. Marta Suárez was lost for the season before the first game. Coming to the Tennessee Lady Vols out of Spain, Suárez attended Joaquim Blume Institute in Barcelona. Before going to Catalonia, though, she hailed from Oviedo, which is in Asturias. Anyway, she made an early impact.
As a true freshman in 2020-2021, Suárez averaged over four points and just under four rebounds in 16 minutes a game, appearing in 22 games. She shot 40.7 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from three and 75 percent from the free throw line. Her efforts earned her SEC All-Freshman with expectations of breaking out in 2021-2022.
However, Suárez got hurt just before the NCAA Tournament in 2021, likely a reason they just advanced to the second round and not the Sweet 16. Then she had to have surgery that knocked her out the entire next year. With all that, though, she still is in the top five here.
It’s impossible to ignore what Suárez did her first year, and with Rae Burrell gone, there is room for multiple wings in the system. Now, the addition of a few transfers who play the four could change that along with five-star Justine Pissott joining the program, but Suárez is still a fixture in the system, so watch out for her.
