Ranking all five Tennessee Lady Vols newcomers by potential impact
Transfer from Minnesota Golden Gophers
Although the Tennessee Lady Vols went two-deep at point guard last year with Jordan Walker and Brooklynn Miles, Walker really shares point guard duties with Jordan Horston, who plays the combo guard role, and Miles is still clearly a backup. She is still young.
As a result, Jasmine Powell coming in is a huge deal. It’s likely she takes Miles’ spot in the backup point guard role at the very least. However, there’s a very good chance Kellie Harper starts her alongside Horston to allow Horston to focus more specifically on scoring while Powell can provide that threat while distributing too.
In all three years in Minnesota, Powell has averaged at least 12 points, and over the past two years, she has averaged over five assists. She also shot over 31 percent from three and over 77 percent from the free throw line, and she averaged nearly a steal a game, so she’s efficient and plays good defense.
All of that makes her a huge threat at 5’6″, and given what she’s proven already, if she’s not a starter alongside Horston, she’ll be probably the top guard coming off the bench to make plays. Either way, she’s going to have an impact on the Tennessee Lady Vols next year.
