It’s always important to target talent in your area, even if that talent isn’t as highly rated and doesn’t fill a position of immediate need. That’s what Tennessee football is doing with one 2023 local kid who has the Vols high on his radar.

Rocky Top is in the top eight for Knoxville, Tenn., athlete DeSean Bishop. A three-star across all services except for ESPN, where he is not yet rated, Bishop stands between 5’10” and 5’11” and weighs in the range of 190 to 195 pounds.

Joining Tennessee football on Bishop’s list are the Memphis Tigers, MTSU Blue Raiders, Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, Appalachian State Mountaineers, Virginia Tech Hokies, Purdue Boilermakers and Michigan State Spartans. He announced the schools Monday afternoon on Twitter.

Coming out of Knox County’s Karns High School, Bishop is actually listed as a running back on 247Sports despite being an athlete everywhere else. Given UT’s three running backs returning and two new additions in their 2022 class, all of whom are underclassmen, that’s not a position of huge need at the moment.

However, Josh Heupel could always improve his depth there, and it’s possible Bishop finds himself occupying another spot if he chooses UT. Questions about his size at running back are irrelevant too given the type of backs who can play in Heupel’s system.

As a result, Bishop is definitely a guy worth targeting. He’s clearly looking at staying in the are given his interest in two other in-state schools and two schools in the Carolinas. Add in the fact that he’s drawing interest from Power Five schools, and the mix of talent, versatility and potential to land him makes him worth pursuing.

Currently, there are no favorites to land him on the Rivals Future Cast and no 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions. Tennessee football is a near-unanimous favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast, but On3 has Purdue and Memphis ahead of them. At the same time, On3 has the Mississippi State Bulldogs as No. 1, and they didn’t make the cut, so anything’s possible.
