Memphis and its surrounding areas are always a crucial area for Tennessee football when it comes to recruiting, and Josh Heupel now has the Vols trending for a specific prospect from a Mississippi suburb of the city. This addresses a position of future need too.

The Vols are in the top three for DeSoto County, Miss., defensive back John Slaughter. A three-star across the board, Slaughter is listed as a safety on every service, standing in the range of 6’1″ to 6’3″ and weighing in the range of 190 to 200 pounds.

Slaughter’s list comes two weeks after he visited Rocky Top. Joining Tennessee football on there are the Ole Miss Rebels and Florida State Seminoles, who he mentioned during that visit. He revealed all three schools with a post on Instagram Thursday.

UT enters this season with two seniors as their starting safeties. Trevon Flowers is back for an extra year of eligibility granted to him due to the COVID 2020 season, so he’ll be gone in 2023 no matter what, and Jaylen McCollough could also be gone if he has a successful year.

As a result, the Vols do have a need at safety going forward, and given his size, a guy like Slaughter would be a good pickup for them. According to 247Sports, both Tim Banks and Jerry Mack are targeting him, so they must see a lot of value in him.

When you combine that with the other schools on his list, he’s clearly a highly touted prospect. That’s the case despite his unanimous three-star rating. There’s clearly a lot of value in his skills set, and Heupel seems to have the Vols in great position to land him as well.

Currently, there are no favorites on the Rivals Future Cast to land Slaughter, but Tennessee football is the overwhelming favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast and On3. The Vols also have the only 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction up, and it’s a medium confidence interval. As a result, they’re clearly the favorite right now.
