Where Tennessee baseball’s 2022 season ranks among all-time Vols choke jobs
2. 1993-1994 Tennessee women’s basketball
Another Pat Summitt team is on here. While the 1999 loss was painful for Tennessee women’s basketball, at least it involved a team that had won three national championships the three years before. This one involved a talented crew of players who cost themselves their best shot at a national title in the early 1990s.
Summitt had won her third title in 1991 and then had a collection of new players to build around in Vonda Ward, Dana Johnson and two-time All-American Nikki McCray. This team roared through the 1993-1994 season, only losing one game, on the road to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Just like this past year’s Tennessee baseball team, it won the SEC Regular Season and Tournament Championship and entered the NCAA Tournament as clearly the best team in the nation. However, it couldn’t get out of the Round of 16, just like this past year’s Tennessee baseball team.
The Vols were shocked in the Sweet 16 by the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 71-68. Make no mistake, had they won that game, they would have gone on to win it all. A year later, they made the title game but lost to a UConn Huskies team that was clearly better. This was the season for the McCray class to win the national title, and they didn’t do it because of this choke.
