Ranking Tennessee football’s 2022 summer enrollees by potential impact
Losing JaVonta Payton leaves the No. 2 wideout spot for Tennessee football wide open. Bru McCoy could fill that as a transfer from the USC Trojans.
He’s been with the USC Trojans and Texas Longhorns, but if anybody can help Bru MCoy realize his true potential as a wide receiver, Josh Heupel can. As a result, it makes sense that Tennessee football could lure him from Southern California to come to Rocky Top.
Standing at 6’3″ 220 pounds, McCoy was once a five-star in 2019 out of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., which is in Los Angeles County. A graduate of Mater Dei High School, he initially committed to Texas before heading to USC, but he has only played one year, 2020. In just six games as a backup, he had 21 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns.
With JaVonta Payton and Velus Jones Jr. gone, the Vols have two openings at receiver this year. McCoy could be in line to immediately replace Payton as the Vols’ No. 2 wideout opposite Cedric Tillman, and he brings a lot more size to the role than Payton did. Either way, he gives Heupel and Hendon Hooker another weapon to work with.
Now, there will be competition for that No. 2 wideout spot. Tennessee football has guys like Ramel Keyton, Jimmy Calloway, Jalin Hyatt and tons of freshmen who could fill that void, but outside of Keyton, McCoy is the only player with Power Five experience who is the size of a wideout. As a result, he’s got to be a favorite.
