Safety is open for some rotational spots, but Tennessee football is locked in with its starters, so Jourdan Thomas has an uphill battle.

All the talk surrounding Tennessee football’s secondary this year is at cornerback and nickel, and with good reason, as the Vols have two voids to fill there. However, given what happened in spring ball, particularly Christian Charles getting some action at cornerback, the Vols may have an opening for a rotational safety.

Both starters are locked up in Trevon Flowers and Jaylen McCollough, and Tamarion McDonald is locked in as a backup. The other spot may be up for grabs, though. Two safeties have arrived this summer, and Jourdan Thomas out of Alabama is one of those guys who could make an impact.

Standing between 6’0″ and 6’2″ and weighing in the range of 185 to 190 pounds, the graduate of Montgomery Catholic Prep in Montgomery, Ala., is built the right way to play safety in the SEC. However, he was a three-star across the board, and as a non-early enrollee, he’s likely going to be a bit of a project for Tim Banks first.

On top of that, this is based on Charles staying over at cornerback, and Cheyenne Labruzza could still compete for one of the rotational spots. As a result, even with the transfer of Tyus Fields, Thomas’ impact on Tennessee football may not be great this year, but the chance is there.
