Tennessee basketball: Ranking Vols by toughest to replace for 2022-23
Transferred to East Tennessee State University Buccaneers
Although Brock Jancek was the only non-scholarship player to leave Tennessee basketball this past year, he’s not the most replaceable. Jancek, unfortunately for Rick Barnes, plays a position that lost a ton of talent down in the post. As a result, a guy like him could end up being a bigger loss than he appears to be on paper.
Standing at 6’8″ 228 pounds, Jancek’s departures is lessened if Tobe Awaka reclassifies as a power forward, but all signs point to that not happening. Although he played just 11 minutes last year in five games, he did score seven points, and he grabbed three rebounds in a game.
Simply put, Jancek brings some things to the table that make him tougher to replace. However, don’t get it twisted. He’s still not a big loss. The ETSU Bucs will be a much better fit for him, and he is a walk-on who played very few minutes for a reason.
From an actual personnel standpoint, Jancek’s frame means he doesn’t even play the position that suffered the biggest loss. Olivier Nkamhoua returning and Barnes being more versatile will make it much easier to find talent at the power forward spot anyway, and Jancek can’t play the five, so he’s still not a huge loss.
