Tennessee football: 10 records Vols will break in 2022
1. Cedric Tillman: Single season and career receiving TDs
Current record holders: Marcus Nash (Single season, 13, 1997); Joey Kent (Career, 25, 1993-96)
In spite of all the records Hendon Hooker will break this year with Tennessee football, Cedric Tillman is the one who will break the biggest record. It’s already been mentioned how his role will increase this year due to more experience and the departure of two other key receivers from 2021.
While that will help Tillman barely break Robert Meachem’s single-season record, it will help him shatter the receiving touchdowns records held by Marcus Nash and Joey Kent. Last year, Tillman caught 12 touchdowns, which tied Cedrick Wilson in 2000 for second to what Nash did with Peyton Manning in 1997. Yes, this is another 1997 passing game record.
Anyway, you have to think he’ll catch more this year with Velus Jones Jr. and JaVonta Payton gone. Remember, he should’ve had about three more in 2021, including two in which he was missed in the opener because Joe Milton III overthrew him. That won’t happen with Hendon Hooker.
Now, he won’t come near the receptions record because he’ll gain lots of yards on his catches. That’s the style of play Heupel employs. However, he should easily be able to top his record last year by two touchdowns, so that’s the most likely record to fall.
If he just matches last year’s production, he beats Kent’s career touchdowns record by one. As a result, by projecting him to break the Tennessee football single season receiving touchdowns record, he’ll definitely break the school’s career touchdowns record.
