8. Team: Points per game

Current record holder: 1993 (42.8)

Yes, despite the yards last year, Tennessee football still didn’t break the school record in points per game. They averaged 39.3. This year, though, they’ll shatter it as the offense takes a huge step forward. The 2022 Vols will be the offensive version of the 1939 Vols, which is the last college football team to go unscored, undefeated and untied on in the regular season.

Now, we will hold off on the overall total points in a season. That’s because there’s always the off-chance the Vols only finish playing 11 games due to missing a bowl and some inclement weather canceling a non-conference game. Yes, bad weather canceling a game is more likely than the Vols breaking the points per game record.

Anyway, this team’s average last year came against 13 opponents who together gave up 25.1 points per game. Well, the Vols’ schedule in 2022 is against opponents who gave up 25.86 points per game last year. Take out the one FCS school, and it’s 24.65 to 25.9, an even greater gap.

If you just go by Power Five foes, it’s 23.96 to 24.33. Finally, Tennessee football’s one new SEC foe is LSU, who replaces the Ole Miss Rebels, increasing the conglomerate points their SEC opponents gave up per game last year from 24.1 to 24.42

It’s fair to bring up defenses aren’t the same. The Vanderbilt Commodores should improve, and the Kentucky Wildcats could be even greater. But Georgia is expected to have a major fall-off. LSU and Florida should be worse too. As a result, that evens out. A full year with Hendon Hooker, more experience in the offense and a slightly easier schedule are why UT will break this record.
