4. Hendon Hooker: Single season passing TDs

Current record holder: Peyton Manning (36, 1997)

To a degree, this one seems obvious. Hendon Hooker didn’t start the first game for Tennessee football, one that screamed for a quarterback to be able to throw for five touchdowns in as since the Bowling Green Falcons were on the other side, and he didn’t come in until the middle of the second game against the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Still, he threw for 31 touchdowns. As a result, there’s good reason to believe Hooker left six touchdown passes on the table last year. Now, with another year in Josh Heupel’s system, slightly worse defenses on the schedule and a full season to play, Hooker could actually shatter Peyton Manning’s record set in 1997.

If the Vols manage to play more than 12 games, it’s certainly going down. There’s an outside chance UT wins the SEC East, at which point it would play a minimum of 14 games this year, one more than Manning did 25 years ago.

Now, Manning’s record will be more impressive given the style of play and the system differences, but Hooker will still break it. Given the data on this list, it’s obvious his touchdown to interception ratio will naturally be a record broken as well. He’ll tear down all the efficiency records.
