3. Hendon Hooker: Single season total TDs

Current record holder: Peyton Manning (39, 1997); Josh Dobbs (39, 2016)

This is actually where Hendon Hooker came extremely close to Peyton Manning and Joshua Dobbs last year. Remember, he didn’t start the first game, and he still finished with 36 total touchdowns, rushing for five on top of the 35 he threw for. As a result, he was really only one start shy of actually breaking that record.

Both Dobbs and Manning played 13 games, so if Tennessee football can get to that point, Hooker will become the first Vol in school history to reach 40 touchdowns. You could easily see him throwing for 37 and running for another eight to reach 45.

In fact, the expectations may be even greater than that. What if Hooker hits the 50-touchdown mark by throwing for 40 and running for another 10? Should that happen, then you have to include him in any discussion involving the Heisman Trophy, particularly if his efficiency numbers when it comes to interceptions comes into play.

Mentioning this record serves just as a reminder of how impressive Dobbs’ 2016 campaign was. It now explains why the Vols fell off so hard the next year, as Dobbs was really hiding all of Butch Jones’ flaws as a head coach. Hooker and Josh Heupel, however, bring out the best in each other.
