Tennessee football: 10 records Vols will break in 2022
2. Hendon Hooker: Single season total offense
Current record holder: Peyton Manning (3,789, 1997)
Yes, once again, Hendon Hooker will break a record set by Peyton Manning in 1997. Joshua Dobbs’ 2016 campaign came close to this with 3,777 total yards, only missing out by 12. However, last year, Hooker had the fourth best year of total offense, gaining 3,561 yards. That was behind Tyler Bray in 2012 in addition to Dobbs and Manning.
Hooker threw for 2,945 yards and ran for another 616. That came despite him getting sacked numerous times last year. It was his one drawback, but since sacks count against rushing yards for quarterbacks in college, you can’t really hold that against him when you look at his overall numbers for the year.
Just like the other records, Hooker was clearly one game away from having the record himself. He won’t touch Manning’s single-season passing yards record, but he will shatter the single-season rushing yards record. Again, just add a start against a MAC opponent to what he did last season.
In that scenario, you’re talking about a 300-yard game in some form. As a result, Hooker is potentially looking at 4,000 total yards this year. Oh, Hooker will also set the Tennessee football record for total yards per game in a season and a career, but he won’t be able to break the total yards record in general since he only played two years for UT.
