Four days after making his top four, Tennessee football didn’t have to wait much longer to add Tyree Weathersby. The 2023 Georgia defensive lineman committed to Rocky Top Friday afternoon over the Kentucky Wildcats, Mississippi State Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks.

A three-star across all services except ESPN, where he is not rated, Weathersby stands between 6’3″ and 6’4″ and weighs around 250 pounds. Coming out of Douglasville, Ga., he attends Douglas County’s New Manchester High School.

While he is specifically listed as a defensive lineman on 247Sports and On3, Weathersby is listed as a defensive end on ESPN and a strongside defensive end on Rivals. Still, he’ll play up on the line. He announced his commitment to Tennessee football Friday evening on Twitter.

The addition of Weathersby is huge for the Vols’ future. One of the underrated roles they utilize is the hybrid defensive tackle. This is what Caleb Tremblay and Ja’Quain Blakely both played last year. They are guys who can play anywhere up front on the line.

Usually, they appear undersized for a defensive tackle but still have enough weight to do the job. Weathersby will need to add 10 to 20 pounds to be able to play that role, but it seems like that’s the best spot for him on Rocky Top.

Losing Tremblay and Blakely was a big loss for the Vols, and while Heupel still has Dominic Bailey, brought in multiple recruits and added Austin Lewis, he could still add more players to fill that void for the future. That’s what makes Weathersby such a big pickup. Here’s a look at his highlight reel.

As you can see, Weathersby is great at getting a jump on the line. He also has a good bit of straight-line speed and can wrap guys up. Stopping the run would likely be his strength at the next level, but he can do it effectively against up-tempo offenses that spread things out.

Weathersby’s commitment follows two other players who could play off the edge for Tennessee football in their 2023 class. One is likely another hybrid defensive lineman in Trevor Duncan, and Nathan Robinson, who is probably more of an edge rusher, is also in this class.
