Top-notch commitments just keep rolling in for Tennessee football early in July, and now the Vols may have picked up their biggest one yet outside of Nico Iamaleava. This time, Josh Heupel added a defensive player from a state he’s very familiar with, Missouri.

Edge rusher Chandavian Bradley, a four-star across the board but actually a five-star on 247Sports Composite, became the Vols’ sixth commitment since the start of July and fifth for 2023. He’s their ninth commitment the past three weeks and eighth for 2023.

Bradley, who hails from Platte County High School in Platte City, Mo., stands between 6’4″ and 6’6″ and weighs in the range of 210 to 220 pounds. He announced his commitment to Tennessee football Sunday afternoon on Twitter.

Despite Heupel’s reputation as an offensive guy, he’s been securing elite talent on the defensive side for 2023 all year. Bradley is the third commitment on that side of the ball who is a four-star across the board. Heupel’s past as offensive coordinator of the Mizzou Tigers in 2016 and 2017 likely helped here.

With Bradley’s commitment, the Vols are now loaded at edge rusher for the future too. Caleb Herring is an elite linebacker who could play that role, and Tyree Weathersby is a solid commit who specifically plays there, and Trevor Duncan and Nathan Robinson could move out there.

Given his frame, Bradley is listed as a weakside defensive end on Rivals, a standard defensive end on ESPN and an edge rusher on 247Sports and On3. It’s pretty clear he’ll be coming off the edge. Here’s a look at his highlight reel.

As you can see, Bradley, who plays defensive end and outside linebacker and also plays basketball, is great at jumping the snap count and knows how to use his size and athleticism. He is also very good in coverage, a crucial aspect of edge rushers in Tim Banks’ system.

With Byron Young, Tyler Baron and Roman Harrison all upper-classmen, a guy like Bradley is huge for Tennessee football. The Vols now have 17 commitments for 2023, and they are back in the top 10 across all services while pushing for the top five.
