Evaluating Tennessee football’s 2023 class at dead period: TEs
Final take
Given the make-up of the program, assuming there are no transfers, decommitments or early departures for the NFL, Tennessee football will be able to go four-deep with scholarship tight ends in 2023. That’s always your goal when it comes to depth at that position specifically.
They will be able to go two-deep at receiving tight end despite the departure of Princeton Fant with Ethan Davis coming in and Miles Campbell still in the system. Meanwhile, the size-based tight ends will also be two-deep, as Jacob Warren can come back in 2023, and Charlie Browder just transferred to the Vols from the UCF Knights.
As a result, if the Vols are going to add more talent here, they should focus on the blocking tight end front, but all of there targets appear to be more receiving tight ends. That makes it not too crucial for them to pick up another player here, but they will need one by 2024.
Prediction
With the lack of need to add a player, Tennessee football is done adding tight ends for its 2023 class. The transfer of Julian Nixon may have opened the door to add another player, but it’s just not going to be necessary, and there are other areas that require greater focus.
The Vols will be fine with that being the result. They’re certainly set at the position this year and for 2023, and they are mostly set there for 2024. Heupel just needs one more tight end on the bigger side to be in the system by the time the 2024 season arrives. He’s got plenty of time to address that issue.
