Tennessee football 2022 preview by position: QB
Backups returning
Joe Milton III
- 6’5″ 245 pounds
- Redshirt senior
- Pahokee, Fla. (Olympia High School)
Last year, Joe Milton III transferred to Tennessee football from the Michigan Wolverines after Josh Heupel was hired. As the one guy Heupel specifically signed on the roster, he was named the starter when UT opened the season against the Bowling Green Falcons. A big arm and lots of mobility made him a desirable quarterback for the system.
However, Milton struggled severely with accuracy, and he was then knocked out of the game against Pitt, never winning his starting job back. He completed 32-of-62 passes (51.6 percent) for my 375 yards (6 yards per attempt) and two touchdowns. Now, he did have no interceptions, and he carried it 28 times for 129 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.
Despite his accuracy issues, Milton is a solid decision maker, and he does have that arm and mobility. As a result, he should be ready to go and operate the offense is something happens to Hooker, and he’s got another year of eligibility left, so he may get his job back in 2023.
Gaston Moore
- 6’2″ 207 pounds
- Redshirt sophomore
- Hilton Head, S.C. (Hilton Head High School)
Initially a commitment to Josh Heupel’s UCF Knights team, Gaston Moore followed him to the Vols in 2021. Moore was a member of the scout team on both fronts and isn’t likely to see any action, but he makes for another returning quarterback familiar with the system. That has to count for something this year.
