Tennessee football 2022 preview by position: QB
Newcomers at QB
Tayven Jackson
- 6’3″ 200 pounds
- Freshman
- Greenwood, Ind. (Center Grove High School)
The first signing for Josh Heupel on the recruiting trail at quarterback, Tayven Jackson was a four-star across the board when he committed to Tennessee football as a member of the Vols’ 2022 recruiting class. The Indiana prospect was then an early enrollee, so he’s already got plenty of experience working in the system.
While Hendon Hooker is cemented as the starter, Jackson could easily make a push for the backup quarterback spot. Joe Milton III isn’t guaranteed that right now. For a while, Jackson appeared to be the future at UT until Heupel secured a commitment from Nico Iamaleava for 2023. That sets up the Vols to have multiple quarterback races possibly until 2024.
Navy Shuler
- 6’0″ 206 pounds
- Redshirt sophomore
- Fletcher, N.C. (Christ School)
While the hype in this class is behind Hooker for 2022 and Jackson for the future, Navy Shuler didn’t just commit to the Vols for no reason. The son of Heath Shuler is a legacy kid and transferred to Rocky Top from the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
Shuler has not yet played a down of college football, but he’s definitely another rotational quarterback, and if Heupel decided to redshirt Jackson this year to save him, he could actually see some action this year. In fact, he could be competing to climb up the ladder on the depth chart, so watch out for him.
