Tennessee football 2022 preview by position: QB
Biggest questions
1. Who wins the backup quarterback job?
As has been mentioned, Tennessee football could go with the veteran here in Joe Milton III or the future in Tayven Jackson. If Josh Heupel decides to redshirt Jackson, then Navy Shuler could also make a push. The Vols have multiple options here, and they all have slightly similar styles, so it will be interesting to see how this works out.
2. Can Hendon Hooker stay healthy for the season?
Even after he came in and won the starting job for the Vols, Hendon Hooker battled injuries. He was knocked out of the game against the Florida Gators and Ole Miss Rebels. Given how much of the hype for UT is based in him, the Vols need him to stay healthy, but he used to get banged up against Virginia Tech, so this is definitely a concern.
3. How much have Hendon Hooker’s pocket presence and Joe Milton III’s accuracy improved?
Although Hendon Hooker was better, Joe Milton III made the right decision more often and stood in the pocket better. Hooker’s biggest weakness is his pocket presence, so he needs to improve that this year. Meanwhile, if Milton’s accuracy improves, he could be a complete quarterback too, so watch for both.
Final take
There aren’t any question as to who is the star for the Vols at quarterback heading into this year. As long as Hendon Hooker is durable and has improved his pocket presence, two things that could go hand in hand, he should be as good as or better than he was last year.
Beyond Hooker, though, Milton will probably hold on to the backup quarterback job. Heupel likes him, he probably wants to redshirt Jackson, and Milton is familiar with the system. As a result, Tennessee football will go through the year with Hooker and Milton running the show, but a healthy Hooker will be the main story.
