Returning backups at DL

Dominic Bailey

  • 6’3″ 270 pounds
  • Redshirt sophomore
  • Salisbury, Md. (St. Frances Academy in Baltimore)

That hybrid defensive tackle role that we discussed with Caleb Tremblay and Ja’Quain Blakely is a key part of the system for Rodney Garner and Tim Banks, and Dominic Bailey is the perfect fit to replace them given his size. Bailey had had one tackle and a pass deflection last year, but his role should increase dramatically this year.

Bryson Eason

  • 6’3″ 300 pounds
  • Redshirt sophomore
  • Memphis, Tenn. (Whitehaven High School)

Initially a linebacker for Tennessee football, Bryson Eason had just three tackles last year in limited action for UT. However, two were tackles for a loss. As a result, he’s got a ton of potential, and with more openings now, his role could increase a lot.

Amari McNeill

  • 6’4″ 285 pounds
  • Redshirt freshman
  • Suwanee, Ga. (Peachtree Ridge High School)

A commitment on the offensive line in 2021, Amari McNeill took a redshirt last year as he converted to defensive line. He now has a chance to work his way into the rotation as a player who could play that hybrid defensive tackle role or what Matthew Butler played.

Maurese Smith

  • 6’3″ 315 pounds
  • Redshirt senior
  • Huntsville, Ala. (Hazel Green High School)

Joining the Vols as a walk-on transfer from the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, Maurese Smith didn’t play last year. However, there’s more room for contributors this year, and he’s got experience, so watch out to see if he ever takes the field.

Isaac Green

  • 6’0″ 300 pounds
  • Redshirt junior
  • Memphis, Tenn. (Central High School)

Another walk-on, Isaac Green has been with Tennessee football since 2019. He still has not yet seen any action, but like Smith, departures from last year could give him that chance now.
