When Danny White hired Josh Heupel last year, it was clear he wanted to make offense the identity of the Tennessee football program going forward. After inserting Hendon Hooker into the starting lineup the second game of the year, that became clear.

The Vols finished the year top 10 in total yards and points per game, and they were in the top 20 in points and yards per play. This year, they have Hooker, their go-to receiver in Cedric Tillman and all their running backs, led by Jabari Small returning along with four offensive linemen.

That has created even greater expectations heading into 2022. However, Heupel and co-offensive coordinator Alex Golesh have some issues to address. They have two rotational receivers to replace and an offensive lineman.

Hooker and Tillman are the stars here, and replacing Cade Mays at right tackle and Velus Jones Jr. in the slot are the biggest questions. Another lesser questions involve finding the No. 2 wideout to replace JaVonta Payton, but there appear to be plenty of options on that front.

Now, one concern from last year that doesn’t appear to have been improved upon is short-yardage running. UT was awful on it in 2021, and news is now out that Len’Neth Whitehead will miss the whole season due to injury. Figuring out short-yardage plays with no power back will be a huge issue.

Still, Tennessee football has a lot of potential on offense this year and a ton of returning talent. As a result, the expectations should be through the roof. After a near record-setting performance last year, there’s reason to believe some records will fall this year. That’s the expectation for the offense in 2022.
