Tennessee football: Five takeaways from Vols media session pre-fall camp 2022
1. No answers on key questions: NCAA investigation and Bru McCoy
Back during SEC Media Days, Josh Heupel noted that the eligibility status of USC Trojans transfer Bru McCoy was up in the air. Given the departure of JaVonta Payton, that’s a big deal, as Tennessee football needs to find another wideout who can complement Cedric Tillman on the opposite side.
On the other hand, it appears as if they are confident that the situation will work itself out. Heupel pretty much said they are giving him the reps as if he’ll be eligible to go. Of course, that doesn’t mean he’ll win the job, as Ramel Keyton and a host of other young receivers are still on the roster, but it’s still worth noting that a decision from the NCAA awaits.
That’s not the only decision awaiting from the NCAA either. Heupel essentially said there is no update on a punishment from the institution based on the violations that were committed under Jeremy Pruitt. However, he also hinted that all signs pointed to no real punishment occurring, and that’s a big deal for the Vols going forward.
If McCoy can go and Tennessee football avoids punishment, the expectations should shoot through the roof. Avoiding punishment is a bigger deal since UT has plenty of options at wideout to complement Tillman, but having both issues solved would be ideal.
