This past spring gave us a glimpse into some of the position battles Tennessee football will have in the fall before the start of Josh Heupel’s second season as head coach. Now, with fall camp underway, those battles are in full swing, and the addition of a dozen summer enrollees has accelerated some while creating others.

Although UT has an advantage with tons of talent returning, that didn’t mean that key players weren’t lost from last year. Combine that with certain positions adding more talent, particularly ones that underperformed at times last year, and there are plenty of races to watch this fall.

As we get set to dive into which of those races are the most important, many of them will be repeats of the spring. However, they are a bit different now in that they mostly have more people competing in them with a few exceptions. Let’s take a look at the top 10 position battles for Tennessee football in fall camp.

These are the Tennessee football Volunteers’ biggest races in the preseason before head coach Josh Heupel’s second year.

10. Linebacker

Everybody is back from last year at linebacker. However, as mentioned in the spring, the three Vols with the lowest PFF regular season grades last year were the three main rotational linebackers: Jeremy Banks, Aaron Beasley and Solon Page III. Now, Banks makes up for it because of how many stats he racks up, so his job is safe.

However, that second linebacker spot and rotational linebacker spot are both up for grabs. Juwan Mitchell is back from a season-ending injury, and the Texas Longhorns transfer occupied one of those spots before getting hurt last year. It’s likely he resumes it again,

Then Tennessee football has a battle between Beasley and Page, but newcomers Jackson Hannah and Elijah Herring added a twist to that in the spring. Changing things up even more, Aaron Willis has since entered the transfer portal, and Kalib Perry is a newcomer who arrived in the summer, so now this race gets interesting.
