Tennessee football’s top 10 position battles for fall camp 2022
9. Backup quarterback
Nothing has changed in terms of the people competing in this race from the spring. Tennessee football obviously returns Hendon Hooker as its starting quarterback. However, while nothing has changed, this is a huge battle that will impact the long-term success of the Vols, and it could have a big impact this year given Hooker’s style of play.
As a result, it still makes the list. You would assume Joe Milton III is still the No. 2 quarterback given the fact that he was the starter last year. Newcomer Tayven Jackson was a high-profile recruit in this past year’s recruiting class, though, so he could still compete.
Meanwhile, Appalachian State Mountaineers transfer Navy Shuler, the son of UT legend Heath Shuler, has joined the program too. It’s likely that Milton backs up Hooker directly, Jackson follows and takes a redshirt and then Shuler is behind Jackson. That’s just based on the hype and experience by all four quarterbacks.
If Milton improves his accuracy, he could become elite, as his decision-making is usually pretty good. Hooker got hurt twice last year and does use his legs, so getting this position right is huge. All of these guys will have a chance to compete for the starting job in 2023 as well, making this an important race.
