8. Slot wide receiver

In the spring, it was really just a race at wide receiver in general to replace the departures of Velus Jones Jr. and JaVonta Payton. The roles of each spot weren’t defined. However, they are much more defined now, and that’s why slot receiver has become a pretty important position battle on its own for Tennessee football.

Now, this is a crucial position that actually should be higher on the list. However, it seems like the role was largely settled in the spring. Josh Heupel and the coaches couldn’t stop Jalin Hyatt, and they went out of their way to tout him at SEC Media Days as well as spring ball.

Taking that into account, it seems like despite this being a battle, things are mostly settled. Now, there are players who could make this interesting, as Walker Merrill could shift into this role, Jimmy Calloway is still there and Squirrel White brings a ton of speed to the position.

Overall, though, Hyatt’s position is pretty clear, and honestly, the races is a bit hollowed out since Cameron Miller has moved to defensive back. It still makes the list, but all signs point to Hyatt becoming a breakout star for the Vols because he has already won the starting job in the slot.
