4. Second wideout

With Jalin Hyatt appearing to lock up the slot position, Cameron Miller switching to defensive back and Tennessee football having a more clear definition of who plays slot and wideout, the No. 2 wideout spot opposite Cedric Tillman is much more clear than it was in the spring. Only Walker Merrill, who we mentioned in the slot side, is a bit ambiguous. He could play either role.

Anyway, Chas Nimrod and Kaleb Webb are two newcomers who competed for that spot back in the spring. Ramel Keyton is the most experienced player here, and he appears to be the favorite to land that role as a senior with two years of eligibility entering the 2022 season.

However, USC Trojans transfer Bru McCoy is the wildcard. McCoy has the most hype as a former five-star in the 2019 class, and he arrived in the summer. So far, though, he has only played one season, 2020, and due to off-the-field issues, there are questions about his eligibility this year.

The likely race is between Merrill and Keyton if McCoy isn’t eligible, depending on the direction Josh Heupel wants to go in for this spot. Merrill has more of the profile that JaVonta Payton, who occupied the role last year, has. Keyton, though, has more experience and potential. Of course, if McCoy does get ruled eligible, this race gets very interesting.
