2. Offensive tackle

Back in the spring, this race just was about right tackle to replace Cade Mays. However, Darnell Wright, after spending last year at left tackle, appears to have converted back to right tackle to offset Tennessee football’s only loss on the offensive line. As a result, the battle now appears to be at left tackle, but given the changes, the safest move is to say offensive tackle.

All we know for sure is that Wright is going to start at one of the tackle spots while the other one is up for grabs. Former walk-on Dayne Davis has the most experience at the position and could end up occupying one of the roles, as he was a rotational guy last year.

Beyond Davis, though, Jeremiah Crawford was the first signee ever for UT who actually committed to Josh Heupel, and the junior college transfer did play over 100 snaps last year. He’s certainly in line. Finally, you’ve got Gerald Mincey, a transfer from the Florida Gators who is a rising star at the position and likely the future for UT there. Could he earn the role early?

All three guys were part of the rotation in the spring, and although early enrollee Addison Nichols saw action there too, the Vols may need him to help out at center if Cooper Mays still struggles with injuries. What has changed, though, is the late commitment of junior college transfer Savion Herring, who arrived in the summer. He could also contend for a spot here.
