Tennessee football’s 15 safest starting spots on 2022 roster in fall camp

Honestly, Chase McGrath could probably be higher on this list, but he’s lost a starting job before. That happened in 2020 when he was with the USC Trojans, and then he transferred to Tennessee football. However, his production with the Vols last year as a place kicker makes his job pretty safe entering his final year of eligibility.
McGrath was 12-of-16 on field goals last year. He didn’t miss an extra point, was perfect on kicks inside 30 and only missed one inside 40. In fact, he was even 3-of-5 on kicks in the 40-to-49 yard range, which is all you can ask for from a college kicker. Simply put, he’s reliable.
There’s a reason McGrath earned All-Pac 12 honorable mention with USC in 2019. He did suffer an injury that slowed him down in 2018, but that shouldn’t be a factor anymore, and if he can remain as reliable this year as he was last year for the Vols, they will have a huge advantage.
Toby Wilson and J.T. Carver are two other returning place kickers on the roster, and Josh Turbyville is a newcomer who can handle place kicking or punting duties. Last year, Wilson actually assumed kickoff duties, which is something McGrath doesn’t do. Still his job as a place kicker is locked in, and nobody will take that this year.
