Tennessee football’s 15 safest starting spots on 2022 roster in fall camp

Despite all the losses in the secondary, Tennessee football is locked up at safety. It starts with Trevon Flowers, who has started for two and a half years at free safety with the Vols despite having 2019 interrupted by a season-ending broken leg on an interception. He’s another one back for a second senior season due to the 2020 COVID eligibility ruling.
Flowers saw some action at nickel in spring ball with Theo Jackson gone, which opens the door that his starting job is safe but where he plays isn’t. However, for now, it appears to be a safe bet that he stays locked in at the position he has been playing the past few years.
Last year, Flowers had two interceptions to go along with three pass deflections, one and a half tackles for a loss, a sack and 82 total tackles, 48 of which were solo. He’s the face of the defense now, evidenced by him being the one player from that side of the ball to attend SEC Media Days.
Of course, Flowers will also compete for a starting job in the return game, specifically as a punt returner, but by nature of him competing, it’s clearly not a safe starting spot. His role as Tennessee football’s returning free safety is all but penciled in unless transfers Andre Turrentine or Wesley Walker make an impact, but either way, he’s safe as a starter.
