Tennessee football’s 2022 schedule: Ranking games by importance
2. Kentucky Wildcats
Saturday, Oct. 29; Neyland Stadium; Knoxville, Tenn.
Sticking with SEC foes, it seems blasphemous to put the Kentucky Wildcats this high up in terms of important games for Tennessee football. However, remember, Kentucky was the Vols’ best win last year. This year, Kentucky is in the Coaches Poll top 25, and UT isn’t, as Mark Stoops’ team has tons of expectations.
As a result, Kentucky is one of the most important games on UT’s schedule. Now, it’s true that you could make a case for South Carolina over Kentucky, but there is a rivalry factor with Kentucky. The Vols seem to take a good bit of pride in owning them even when they are having their best seasons, as they did in 2018 and 2021.
This year, Kentucky travels to Knoxville, which should give the Vols the advantage, but it’s by no means a circled win. There’s a very good chance this game will determine who challenges Georgia for the SEC East title. Both teams have to play the Dawgs in November.
We already mentioned the potential of that 5-0 start for Tennessee football. Well if that happens, this determines if they can get into November at 7-1, which would make them College Football Playoff contenders. The game is a huge deal and one that will require lots of focus.
