Tennessee football’s 2022 schedule: Ranking games by importance
6. Missouri Tigers
Saturday, Nov. 12; Neyland Stadium; Knoxville, Tenn.
Welcome to the final circled game on here. Tennessee football has five circled wins and two circled losses, which is a better position than last year. Part of this is based on what Josh Heupel and the Vols did to Mizzou on the road in 2021. That blowout win was the signature game to show the arrival of the program under Heupel.
It’s hard to think that this year’s Vols, who should be even better and get Mizzou at home, are in any sort of threat when it comes to losing this game. Technically, it should be a cusp toss-up game, but the way that all shook out last year makes it a circled win.
Still, being close like that makes Mizzou more important than any of the other circled games. They are an SEC East opponent, after all, and they are capable of winning this one. After losing three in a row to Rocky Top for the first time since joining the SEC, they’ll probably have this circled as a revenge game as well.
A point of contention for Tennessee football fans was Mizzou gaining the early advantage in the series when they joined the SEC. UT was finally able to even things up last year, and the series is now tied 5-5 for both teams. The Vols can finally take the lead in the series this year, which makes it even more important.
