All the principles with Jaylen McCollough apply to Trevon Flowers. These two have started at safety together for two full years now, and there’s not a lot of experience behind them. Meanwhile, they will have to bring along Tennessee football’s lack of experience at cornerback and nickel, at least in the early part of the year.

Flowers wasn’t the playmaker McCollough was last year, but he’s more the glue guy in the secondary. His experience and abilities in coverage make him the most crucial defensive back on the team. It’ll be hard to offset his understanding of what the defense needs to be doing.

Now, Josh Heupel appears to have brought in more help, as Ohio State Buckeyes transfer Andre Turrentine and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets transfer Wesley Walker are seeing action at safety. We mentioned Tamarion McDonald and Christian Charles, and Doneiko Slaughter and Cheyenne Labruzza are on the roster too.

Labruzza is actually more experienced than Flowers. Newcomers Christian Harrison and Jourdan Thomas also play safety. Still, no player brings the starting experience value to Tennessee football’s secondary like Flowers does, and that puts him extremely high on the list. Add in his versatility and experience playing roles like star, and he’ll be crucial.
