Tennessee football: Ranking head coaches on Vols’ 2022 schedule
263-96-2
- Grand Valley State Lakers: 1991 to 2003 (118-35-2)
Speaking of maxing out success at programs, Brian Kelly won a national championship with the Grand Valley State Lakers, he won a MAC Championship with the Central Michigan Chippewas, and he had an undefeated regular season with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Oh, he took the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the national championship game.
Add in two College Football Playoff appearances at Notre Dame, and it’s safe to say Kelly has done as much as you can at every program. Tennessee football had a chance to hire him after firing Phillip Fulmer in 2008 but passed on him for Lane Kiffin, one of the worst mistakes of the Mike Hamilton era, and there were many.
Butch Jones built his reputation by having success at programs directly following Kelly. Now, Kelly is finally at a place where he could win big, and he may have a dynasty brewing. He’s the first competent coach of the LSU Tigers since Nick Saban, and the program is in much better shape now. Louisiana football talent makes it an easy job.
Simply put, Kelly could be extremely difficult to deal with in the future, and he’s the best head coach on here to not win a national title in FBS play. Tennessee football’s one stroke of good fortune, though, is that they get Kelly in his first year at LSU. Although they play them on the road, they have to take advantage. Kelly will dominate soon enough.
