Tennessee football: Ranking head coaches on Vols’ 2022 schedule
269-67-1
- Toledo Rockets: 1990 (9-2)
- Michigan State Spartans: 1995 to 1999 (34-24-1)
- LSU Tigers: 2000 to 2004 (48-16)
- Alabama Crimson Tide: 2007 to present (178-25)
Even with losing the national championship game to Kirby Smart, nobody’s going to debate Nick Saban atop this list. He’s still won six national championships with the Alabama Crimson Tide and eight SEC Championships. Add in his years with LSU, and he’s got seven national championships and 10 SEC championships in 20 years coaching in the SEC.
That’s insane. Tennessee football is Saban’s biggest victim too. The Vols have lost to him every year he’s been at Alabama. They also went 1-2 against him when he was at LSU, including LSU upsetting them in the 2001 SEC Championship game, costing them the SEC and a shot at the national title to face the Miami Hurricanes.
Simply put, while Saban is arguably the greatest coach of all time and has had the greatest success in the SEC, the Vols are probably his biggest victim. They and Arkansas are the only two teams who have lost to Alabama every single year he’s been there. However, Arkansas did win two games against him when he was at LSU.
As a result, Tennessee football is simply the team Saban owns the most. He’s also the best head coach in the SEC, and the Vols are about to have to face him again. Add in the revenge factor that will be in play after losing last year’s national championship game, and UT could be in trouble.
