Tennessee football: Ranking head coaches on Vols’ 2022 schedule
7-6
Both Josh Heupel and Shane Beamer had solid first seasons, going 7-6. Tennessee football beat the South Carolina Gamecocks 45-20 last season, so it would seem as if Heupel is the better coach right now. On paper, though, lots of things would seem to suggest these two are close.
Beamer scored impressive wins over the Florida Gators and Auburn Tigers, the latter of whom had their own first-year head coach in Bryan Harsin, to close out November. He also scored an impressive bowl win over the North Carolina Tar Heels. Then, this offseason, he added Oklahoma Sooners transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler.
However, identical records don’t take certain things into account. For starters, South Carolina’s opponents from the west were Auburn and Texas A&M. The Vols played the teams that finished first and second in the West, the Ole Miss Rebels, and, obviously, Alabama.
Both lost their non-conference games to top 25 ACC foes. However, the Vols lost by a touchdown to the ACC Champion Pittsburgh Panthers. South Carolina lost 30-0 to the Clemson Tigers, who lost to Pitt. As a result, Beamer has more to prove this year, and that would put Tennessee football’s coach ahead of him, but he’s got a chance to rise.
