Tennessee football: Ranking head coaches on Vols’ 2022 schedule
52-25
- Fordham Rams: 2012 to 2015 (38-13)
- Mississippi State Bulldogs: 2018 to 2019 (14-12)
Yes, Joe Moorhead is back in the coaching ranks. The Akron Zips are far and away the worst team Tennessee football will face this year, as we have mentioned numerous times. However, Joe Moorhead is a much better coach, based on accomplishments, than some of the head coaches of lesser programs as of right now.
Sure, Moorhead got fired by the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 2019 and lost to the Vols that year, but he wasn’t bad. It’s just a no-brainer to make that move if you’ve got a chance to get Mike Leach. Before that, though, his success at the FCS level was something to be desired.
Moorhead had four straight winning seasons with the Fordham Rams, finishing in the top 20 of FCS rankings and reaching the FCS Playoffs each of his final three years. He had a top 10 finish in 2013 and won the Patriot League Championship in 2014. Simply put, he oversaw lots of success at Fordham, and even if it’s at a lower level, that’s enough to put him here.
Don’t forget that Moorhead had a top 25 finish his first year at Mississippi State too. Again, he wasn’t fired for lack of production. He’s an offensive genius, which could hurt Tennessee football this year, and that’ll serve him well at Akron. It just won’t this year because of the depleted roster.
