And with that, the Tennessee Vols’ 2022-23 athletics season is underway. Happy Friday. With the UT football season opener less than to weeks away now, the first sporting match of the academic year took place Thursday night. That wasn’t the only huge bit of news either to come down the pipeline that day.

Our morning report on Rocky Top leads with a huge football story involving the reveal of a uniform combination. It’s one Tennessee Vols fans should be familiar with given the fact that it was worn multiple times in four out of five seasons from 2013 to 2017, but bringing it back was a shock.

We’ll also obviously cover the opening game for the sport that kicked off the season, which occurred in soccer. It didn’t have the desired result for UT fans, but it did add to the excitement of fall being just around the corner. There’s another soccer watch list as well for us to get to. Let’s start with football news, though.

Smokey Grey uniforms return – UTSports

Nike revealed Thursday that the Tennessee Vols Smokey Grey uniforms for football are coming back. UT will wear a different variation of them one time each year from 2022 through 2025. This year, they will wear the original Nike ones that were worn under Butch Jones from 2015 to 2017.

"Tennessee owns a 3-1 record wearing Nike’s Smokey Grey uniform, including a pair of 21-point comeback wins (2015 – vs. Georgia and 2016 – vs. Florida) and a 38-24 victory over Nebraska in the 2016 Music City Bowl that saw Derek Barnett break Reggie White’s UT career sack record. The Volunteers will don the uniform for the first time since Sept. 30, 2017."
