Edge rusher. 6'3 245 lbs. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Byron Young. 2. player. 839

After joining Tennessee football mid-season last year, Byron Young became the Vols’ breakout star, tying for the team lead in sacks and tackles for a loss.

He wasn’t even able to play until the Vols faced the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. However, Byron Young immediately emerged as the team’s best pass rusher, taking the job away from Tyler Baron and Roman Harrison, the latter of whom is also a senior who will have another year of eligibility after this one.

Nobody saw this coming from Young when he transferred from Georgia Military College to Tennessee football. Here’s a guy who spent 18 months working at Dollar General before earning a spot on the GMC roster, only to become a highly touted junior college transfer.

This makes Young a 24-year-old true senior heading into the season. Last year, he tied Jeremy Banks as the team leader in tackles for a loss and sacks with 11.5 and five and a half respectively, but given those numbers, expectations are for him to take a huge step forward this year.

Young was the only Vol to earn First Team All-SEC on both the media and the coaches preseason picks. He’s the perfect fit for this system, and he showed in the Music City Bowl that he can be effective dropping back in coverage as well. Also, based on that game and their win at the Kentucky Wildcats, he makes his biggest plays when he’s needed, which is a huge deal.
