Tennessee football’s top five graduate seniors for 2022
A by-committee system is expected at tight end this year, but Princeton Fant’s return helps with the strategy a lot for Tennessee football.
To be completely objective, it’s not like Tennessee football couldn’t have made it without Princeton Fant. Jacob Warren, who was last year’s red zone tight end, could have played the role full-time. Miles Campbell, meanwhile, was a highly touted 2021 recruit who took a redshirt last year, so he would have provided depth.
Add in UCF Knights transfer Charlie Browder, and the Vols have a solid rotation here. However, make no mistake, Fant is the best of the bunch. He’s a true athlete, having played running back before converting to tight end, and this is his first year since arriving at UT in 2017 that he is returning to play the same position in the same system.
As a result, there’s a great case for putting Fant up here. Last year, he had 16 catches for 220 yards and a touchdown. With Velus Jones Jr. and Javonta Payton gone, you could see Josh Heupel and Alex Golesh rely more heavily on the tight ends this year. That’s where Fant comes into play.
Heupel has experience relying on tight ends in the passing game, and he could do it again based on his personnel. It’s up for debate whether or not that will happen with Fant, but it’s pretty clear that if he’s healthy and able to go, he’ll be a factor for the Vols this year.
