Tennessee football’s top five graduate seniors for 2022
Battling starting jobs at two different schools, Hendon Hooker enters his final season with Tennessee football as the guaranteed starter at last.
Easily the worst indictment against Josh Heupel so far as Tennessee football’s head coach is the fact that he started Joe Milton III at the beginning of last season over Hendon Hooker. He may have had his reasons, but it’s pretty clear Hooker was leaps and bounds better from the start.
Hooker had a historic season, completing 206 of 303 passes (68 percent) for 2,945 yards (9.7 yards per attempt), 31 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran it 166 times for 616 yards (3.7 yards per carry) and five touchdowns, and since sacks in college count against a quarterback’s rushing totals, that’s an impressive stat line.
Setting school records for completing percentage, yards per attempt and touchdown to interception ratio for quarterbacks with at least 300 pass attempts should be enough to turn pro. His total offense was third behind only Josh Dobbs and Peyton Manning, bolstering that case.
However, Hooker decided to return to Tennessee football for his second senior year. His decision coincides with that of his go-to receiver, Cedric Tillman, who came back for his regular senior year. The duo back on the field is a huge reason for the hype behind the Vols this year, and if they can take their play to the next level, records will be shattered.
