Nobody knows more about opening the season against the Georgia State Panthers than Tennessee football. The Vols lost 38-30 to Shawn Elliott’s program in 2019 to begin Jeremy Pruitt’s second year. Now, the South Carolina Gamecocks have to deal with the same thing in Shane Beamer’s second season.

With the addition of Oklahoma Sooners transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler, this is supposed to be the year that Beamer’s program finally takes off. They did finish 7-6 last year and scored wins against Auburn and Florida, so their improvement can’t go unnoticed. Add in a quarterback, and they are a dangerous team.

Elliott, meanwhile, is quietly building a program at Georgia State. This is in the heart of Atlanta, where he can just get a car and go find some talent. Lots of that talent is back from an 8-5 campaign, and this is a great chance for him to let the public know his program has arrived.

Prediction

Georgia State is improving, but lots of its success was against lower-level teams last year. South Carolina isn’t Tennessee football in 2019. They’ll have some growing pains with Rattler at quarterback, but they’ll get things going in the second half of this one to win and cover. GSU won’t score enough for the game to hit the over.
