Gambling odds

  • Line: Georgia -17
  • Over/Under: 53.5
  • Moneyline: Georgia -950; Oregon +625

You can’t find a more exciting top 10 matchup to start the season than this one. The Oregon Ducks are moving forward with the Georgia Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator the past three years, Dan Lanning, as Mario Cristobal’s replacement as head coach. Then Lanning gets to face his old team to kick off his era.

Oregon is coming off a 10-4 season in which they played for the Pac-12 Championship. At No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in the Coaches Poll, they have some questions on offense, having to replace quarterback Anthony Brown, and bringing in Bo Nix from the Auburn Tigers should help with that. However, their defense is the story, as they are loaded, particularly at linebacker.

On the other side, Georgia loses a ton of talent on defense, which is why Tennessee football is a trendy upset pick for them. Still, at No. 3 in both polls, they return Stetson Bennett, and their offense should be even better this year as they get set to defend their national championship under Kirby Smart.

Prediction

It’s ambitious for the spread to be so large but the over/under so small. That’s overlooking that UGA might be more offensive-oriented this year. The talent will be Georgia’s offense on the field against Oregon’s defense. However, Oregon has talent up front on offense.

As a result, despite this game being in Georgia, go with the Ducks to cover the spread. They won’t win outright, but they’ll make this game interesting. Veteran quarterback Bo Nix can score enough behind that elite line against an inexperienced Georgia defense. That’s how they cover, and it also helps the game hit the over.

Georgia: 34 Oregon: 27 (Oregon +17; Over 53.5)
