Tennessee football: Why did Carnell Tate tweet a picture of himself in a Vols’ uniform?

There’s been a lot of chatter over the past week that Tennessee football is still in the running for Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 commitment Carnell Tate. Well, either the wide receiver from Chicago who attends IMG Academy in Florida is playing into that for fun, or it’s legitimate at this point.

A five-star on Rivals and 247Sports composite but a four-star everywhere else, Tate, who stands at 6’2″ and weighs in the range of 170 to 185 pounds, committed to OSU back in June. He chose them over the Vols, Alabama Crimson Tide, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs.

However, last week, Tate was seen on social media with Tennessee football’s five-star quarterback commitment Nico Iamaleava. Then, on Tuesday, he took it a huge step further, tweeting out a picture of himself in a Vols uniform.

Being seen with Iamaleava is one thing. Tweeting out a picture of yourself in the uniform of the school you didn’t commit too is something entirely different. Even more interesting is the reason he tweeted out the picture.

Tate was sending out a happy birthday to UT Director of Recruiting Angelia Brummett, who is in the picture with him. Now, detractors from anybody reading into this will just say that all pictures he has with her involve him in a Vol uniform.

That doesn’t explain the language in the tweet, though. Tate referred to her as the GOAT. Yes, he referred to the Vols’ director of recruiting as the greatest of all time. Wouldn’t he reserve that title for somebody from Ohio State who lured him to Columbus?

This all comes after Chad Simmons of On3 reported last week that the Vols still seem to be in play for him. According to Simmons, there are reports behind the scenes that he’s back in connection with UT. Signs pointed to him preferring Rocky Top during his recruitment, but he had a connection with Ohio State’s staff.

Does this mean Tate could end up with Tennessee football after all? It’s possible. Should that happen, you have to wonder what former UT assistant Brian Niedermeyer would think since he coached Tate at IMG Academy this past year and seemed to troll the Vols about him choosing OSU, as we wrote about here.
