Tennessee football in top half of SEC Power Rankings for Week 1 of 2022
Defeated Utah State Aggies 55-0
Okay, when it comes to projections, the Alabama Crimson Tide are the best team in the SEC right now. Regardless of the hype behind Tennessee football, this game should still be written off as a loss for the Vols, particularly with the mission Nick Saban’s team is on this year to win the national championship after last year’s loss.
However, again, SEC Power Rankings are based on how you’re playing right now with no account for what happened the previous year. In that way, it’s hard to put Alabama any higher than No. 4 despite their flawless performance over the Utah State Aggies this past weekend.
At the end of the day, they just blew out a Mountain West Conference team. Now, they looked better against a lower tier team than anybody else on this list, and that’s enough to keep them at No. 4. If they had played a Power Five team in Atlanta the way they usually do to open the season, we’d probably still have them ranked No. 1.
That wasn’t the case here. Still, the Tide should be happy about their situation, and they have a chance to rectify this issue pretty quickly. This week, they visit the Texas Longhorns, a team that looks much better this year after blowing out the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. As a result, they’ll have their chance to retake the No. 1 spot pretty quickly.
