Tennessee football in top half of SEC Power Rankings for Week 1 of 2022
Defeated Oregon Ducks 49-3
There’s obviously no question about this one. Sure, Utah was better than the Oregon Ducks last year, but that’s not a guarantee this year. At the moment, they are just two Pac-12 schools and the only Power Five Schools SEC teams beat over the weekend. The tiebreaker at that point has to come down to who was more dominant.
Is there any question about the Georgia Bulldogs? Kirby Smart’s program pretty much lost its whole defense and was supposed to be somewhat rebuilding. His defensive coordinator is now the head coach at Oregon. In spite of all that, UGA absolutely dominated the Ducks from start to finish, and now Stetson Bennett looks like a Heisman contender.
Based on this weekend, it may be time to write off Georgia as a potential upset for Tennessee football. UT has to visit them in November, and if they still look this good, there’s a chance they are as invincible as they were last year on defense. Combine that with the improvements Bennett made, and this team is scary.
Up next for UGA is a home game against the Samford Bulldogs, so they’ll easily be 2-0 by SEC play, which begins with a visit to South Carolina. Oregon was their first real test, and dominating like that makes them one of the scariest teams in the nation now.
