Tennessee football in top half of SEC Power Rankings for Week 1 of 2022
Defeated Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 52-24
Back to teams that actually looked good against FBS Group of Five foes, the Missouri Tigers don’t look like the team Tennessee football blew out last year. In Eli Drinkwitz’s third season, they might be a much tougher out based on the way they looked against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in their opener, particularly their offense.
Despite the loss of Tyler Badie, Mizzou’s offense gained 568 yards, including 323 on the ground, against Louisiana Tech. It took them a while to get going, as they didn’t score anything in the first quarter, but then they scored 24 in the second. They were putting on a show Thursday night just as Tennessee football was putting on a show.
Obviously, that start could be a bit concerning, and you never know what to make of a team’s performance against one of the caliber of Louisiana Tech, but in terms of our SEC Power Rankings, there’s no doubt that Mizzou belongs here. They showed a lot last week.
Now, they immediately get the chance to prove that blowout was legit, as they take a visit to the Kansas State Wildcats this week. Should they win that matchup, they’ll at least get to 3-0, as they host Abilene Christian on Sept. 17, so this is a huge matchup for them.
