The first SEC matchup of the season is the rekindling of what was once a yearly rivalry from 1992, when these two teams first joined the league and both upset Tennessee football, through 2011. Now, they both enter this matchup with a lot to gain, as they each are looking to prove they have taken a step forward over last year.

Coming off a blowout win over the Georgia State Panthers, a team Tennessee football lost to in its 2019 opener, Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks appear to still have issues. Spencer Rattler wasn’t great at quarterback, but Beamer Ball was the difference, with a punt return for a touchdown, helping to fuel the dominance.

On the other side, the Arkansas Razorbacks got a quality win right off the bat, beating the Cincinnati Bearcats. They are now No. 16 in the AP Poll and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. A win this week would give them effectively two Power Five wins even though Cincy is a Group of Five team. Can Sam Pittman’s kids avoid a hangover?

Prediction

Arkansas had some issues in punt coverage last week, which should give South Carolina an advantage. However, they have this game at home, and their run game is too dominant. The Hogs had over 200 yards on the ground last week, and South Carolina gave up 200 on the ground.

As a result, in this matchup, Arkansas will torch South Carolina doing just that. Like K.J. Jefferson, Darren Grainger was a dual-threat quarterback for GSU, and South Carolina couldn’t stop him on the ground. Jefferson will fuel a dominant rushing attack, and that’ll result in a lot of clock running while Arkansas wins easily, so take them covering and the under.

Arkansas: 31 South Carolina: 14 (Arkansas -8.5; Under 53)
