Here’s one epic Saturday evening game, and it’s very relevant to Tennessee football. The Florida Gators shocked the world by upsetting the Utah Utes last weekend in Billy Napier’s first game, and that got them into the top 25 of both polls, ranked No. 12 in the AP Poll and No. 19 in the Coaches Poll. Now they get another top 25 matchup.
Heading into town, the Kentucky Wildcats, ranked No. 20 in both polls, are coming off a solid blowout victory over the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks. This is the first time under Mark Stoops that they return a ton of talent, including their key weapons, after a 10-win season and top 25 finish, so expectations for them are through the roof.
It all starts with a chance to beat Florida again. In both of Kentucky’s 10-win seasons under Stoops, including last year, they shocked the Gators. Tennessee football gets both these teams at home, and they now both look like they could be brutal SEC East matchups, as if Georgia wasn’t tough enough for them.
Prediction
Anthony Richardson didn’t start last year’s game for Florida against Kentucky, the game was at Kentucky, and Kentucky needed tons of lucky special teams plays to win. As a result, it’s going to be a completely different outcome in this game, one that further scares Tennessee football fans.
Florida will win and actually cover, as they’ll dominate with Richardson on the ground. That both teams have a focus on the ground game will be enough to call for it to hit the under as well. Look for the Gators to win an old-school SEC-style matchup.
